Who needs what license
Home improvement work on existing homes needs a state MHIC license. Master electricians, plumbers and HVACR contractors are licensed by the state Department of Labor.
Common permits
DPIE handles building permits, use & occupancy permits and code enforcement. The county's Permit Rapid Response Team (PRRT) streamlines permitting for major development projects.
How to apply
Start from the DPIE Permit Services section. For general questions the state directory notes that Prince George's routes calls through PGC311.
Fees
Heads up: DPIE posted a new permitting fee schedule effective Oct 16, 2026. Price any job filed on or after that date from the new schedule on the DPIE homepage.
Codes in force
Maryland requires every county to use the same IBC, IRC and IECC editions (the Maryland Building Performance Standards), with local amendments. Prince George's amendments are linked from the state's county contacts page.
